PRIMES is an innovative company in the field of photonics. It has about 35 employees, whereas 40% of them are working in R & D.
PRIMES offers measuring techniques for the beam analysis of beam sources and laser systems from micro up to macro ranges as well as for beam powers from the milliwatt up to the multi-kilowatt range. The aspect that makes many PRIMES measuring devices special is that the characteristics of the laser beam are measured directly in the process zone which means that the parameters that determine the process result in the end are determined immediately.
The market segments that are served are in the field of photonics such as beam source manufacturers and system integrators as well as end-user markets of laser technology in the sector of automotive engineering, sheet metal processing, electronics, medical technology as well as photonics.
PRIMES has a worldwide sales network of distributors with a total export share of up to 50%. Altogether a total of 3000 beam analysis systems are in service for customers in Germany and abroad. In the past few years PRIMES was regularly able to achieve a self-financed double-digit growth.
Due to the networking with the well-developed national research infrastructure as well as the industrial infrastructure, innovations can be realised target-orientedly. In the current economic situation there are publicly-funded research projects that help carrying out innovations in order to emerge technologically strengthened from the crisis.
PRIMES was spun out from the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology. The research results that had been achieved in the course of the cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute were soon turned into marketable measuring devices. Regular innovations have extended the product range by a multiple. A calibration laboratory for laser power measuring devices was set up and was equipped with a 3.5 kW CO2-laser (in 2002) and a 1 kW NdYAG laser (in 2004). In 2004 the company moved into a new building which already had to be extended with a second construction stage in 2006.
Experts in the area of beam source development, beam propagation and laser application are part of the PRIMES team. This team is complemented by experts in device-specific fields: electronics, mechanics and software. Due to this, PRIMES is in the position to offer sophisticated solutions and to realise customer-specific requests in the cross-sectional technology "laser”.
For PRIMES training and education is a top priority. At the moment the company is employing one apprentice as a physics laboratory technician trainee and in August a second apprentice is starting his apprenticeship as an electronics technician for devices and systems. Moreover, PRIMES supervises dissertations as well as industrial internships. A practical job year for senior students is carried out. The attendance of several national and international conferences ensures a continuous optimization of the professional competence and expertise.
